Your Guide to the Traditional Chinese Characters Competition

1. The purpose of this competition is to:

1.) Promote the beauty of Chinese Characters 2.) Enhance the use of Chinese Characters

3.) Understand the development of Chinese Characters 4.) Motivate foreigners in learning Chinese Characters

The Host: National Chiayi University, Language Center, Division of Chinese as a Second Language

  1. Eligible contestants:

1.) Foreigners who live in Taiwan and are not citizens of Taiwan, R.O.C.

2.) Elementary school third-graders born in Taiwan before September 1st, 2011 3.) Only a maximum of 15 contestants can participate from the same school

4.) Overseas Chinese students are NOT eligible to participate in the competition

  1. Registration: Online registration is open until September 22th, 2019
  2. Maximum number of participants:
  • 120 foreigners (not including citizens of Taiwan, R.O.C.)
  • 30 Taiwanese third-grade students

Registration will close once the maximum number applicants has been reached

  1. The competition schedule:
  • When to register online?     12 August, 2019 ~ 22 September, 2019
  • When to compete?               19 October, 2019; Starting time: 10:30am
  • Where to compete?             4th Floor, Internal Conference Hall, Building B (Xinmin Campus) National Chiayi University (No. 580 Xinmin Rd., Chiayi City 60054, Taiwan R.O.C.)

7. Check-in: 9:30-10:00 am, October 19, 2019

  • Foreigners: Please bring your passport or residence permit.
  • Taiwanese elementary school third-graders: Please bring a photo IDs; such as: National ID Card, National Health Insurance Card, Passport, Library Card etc..
  1. Competition Rules and Guidelines:

 

The characters for the competition will be chosen from 1,000 characters contained within the “Classification on Chinese 8,000 Words” list. (https://www.sc-top.org.tw/download/8000zhuyin.zip) There will be two parts of this competition: the first part being Chinese character identification, the second being Chinese character writing. A phrase/sentence will be given, then participants will be asked to identify/write down the character in the phrase/sentence under strict time parameters. Written characters must comply with the standard font regulations issued by the Ministry of Education. Participants will be eliminated immediately from the competition with any mistakes made to the Chinese characters. Subsequent questions will be given final three participants remain. These three contestants will continue to compete until they are ranked as first, second and third.

  1. Awards:

Prizes the winners will receive are:

  • First place prize:     NTD $8,000 and a prize plate
  • Second place prize: NTD $5,000 and a prize plate
  • Third place prize:    NTD $2,000 and a prize plate

To show our appreciation after the competition all the contestants:

  • Are eligible to receive a free lunch box that includes locally grown turkey and rice
  • May join the optional culture courses at their own expense if they wish (The culture courses will be changed or not be held by the organizer if the participants are less than 20 people.)

IMPORTANT: We do not accept on-site culture courses registration - prior booking is ESSENTIAL

  • All winnings are subject to 20% income tax under the R.O.C. Income Tax Law.
